DYS' FOSTER CARE PROGRAM

The foster care program provides temporary homes to children who are at risk from abuse/neglect at home. While the caseworkers work with the child's family of origin to resolve problems that may be contributing to the abuse/neglect, the child is temporarily placed in foster homes that have been screened for safety and health purposes.

Currently, DYS continues in its efforts to recruit people from the community who may be interested in becoming foster parents. The foster parents who have remained in the program gain recognition for their efforts through incentives offered by DYS. Two years ago, one foster parent attended the National Child Abuse and Neglect Conference in St. Louis as she was nominated from the CNMI for the Commissioner's Award, an award given to outstanding individuals who have assisted in promoting the health and welfare of abused and neglected children. Another foster parent was nominated recently by DYS as a Parent Leader for her years of commitment to children who needed foster homes.
