As required be by the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Statue, the Division of Youth Services (DYS) was mandated by law to provide prevention programs for all youth residing in the Commonwealth. Since 1999, the Juvenile Probation Unit (JPU) has collaborated witgh agencies such as the Division of Sports & Recreation, and recently the Council for Arts and Culture as well as other government agencies in the creation of the Summer Youth Sports Camp. For the past six years over 250 to 300 youths throughout the CNMI between the ages of six through thirteen years old take part on the three week program which emphasizes in cultural awareness, Physical Fitness, Water Sports and instructions in basic sports fundamentals. In addition, during the three week long camp presenters from agencies like Public Health, Fish & Wildlife, the Fire Division, and the Historical Preservation take time to visit the camp to talk to the kids. For the past seven years in coordination with the Division of Sports & Recreation the Division of Youth Services/Juvenile Probation Unit has been instrumental in establishing the Island Village Youth Basketball League (IVYBL). The program targeted all youths between the ages of nine through fourteen years old. Games are scheduled on week nights at different villages throughout the island. All players are required to be drug free and mandatory school enrollment is required. Upon request of the Public School System, the Juvenile Probation Unit entertaines request for delinquency presentation. |
