Course Information

Early Childhood STEP is a course that provides: (1) a look at the long term goals of parenting, (2) information on how young children think, feel, and act, (3) skills that can increase your enjoyment and effectiveness as a parent, (4) skills that can develop your child'sself-esteem and confidence, (5) support for yourself as a young parent and a person, and (6) effective ways to teach cooperation and discipline.

Outline of the Sessions

Session 1: Topic-"Understanding Young Children"-This session is about raising your child to be respectful, responsible, cooperative; how children grow at their own rate; helping you child develop positive beliefs; play is the "work" of children; and your job is to guide your children. 

Session 2: Topic-"Understanding Young Children's Behavior"-This session is learning that your child has beliefs about how to belong; your child's behaviors comes from these beliefs; not all troublesome behavior is misbehavior; focusing on the positive encourages positive behavior. 

Session 3: Topic-"Building Self-Esteem in the Early Years"-This session is about learning that respect and encouragement can help build your child's self esteem; encouraging your child could help your child feel loved, accepted, respected, and valued; praise and encouragement are not the same thing; you need to encourage yourself.  

Session 4: Topic-"Listening and Talking to Young Children"-This session is abut listening and talking respectfully to your child; listening to hear how your child is feeling; showing your child that expressing feelings is okay; talking about problems without blaming. 

Session 5: Topic-"Helping Young Children Learn to Cooperate"-This session is about cooperation means working together; your child is learning about cooperation; cooperation needs patience and encouragement; you and your child can solve problems by talking together. 

Session 6: Topic-"Discipline for Young Children"-This session is about the difference between discipline and punishment; the goal of discipline is to teach your child self-discipline; you can give your child choices within
limits; disciplining with respect and consistency is possible. 

Session 7: Topic-"Young Children's Social and Emotional Development"-This session is about how your child can learn healthy ways to share feelings; you can set limits to encourage independence; you can help your child and yourself develop courage to meet challenges.
